PlantUML for Confluence Cloud without a PlantUML server

Most PlantUML apps for Confluence send your diagram text to a PlantUML server to draw it. PlantUML Diagrams by Bitwerf runs the official PlantUML engine inside Confluence, so your diagrams never leave Atlassian.

What you get

Moving from an older PlantUML app

Atlassian ends support for apps built on the older Connect platform on 31 January 2027. If your current PlantUML macro comes from a Connect app, switching takes a few minutes per page:

  1. Install PlantUML Diagrams by Bitwerf from the Atlassian Marketplace.
  2. Open the page, edit the old macro and copy its PlantUML text.
  3. Type /plantuml, paste the text into the new editor and click Save.
  4. Delete the old macro and publish the page.

Questions

Do I need a PlantUML server?

No. The engine (MIT licensed) runs in the browser inside Confluence.

Can I use C4 diagrams?

Yes. Use !include <C4/C4_Context> and the other C4 files, they are bundled with the app.

What about includes from the internet?

They are not loaded. Nothing is fetched from outside Atlassian, which is what keeps your data private.

What happens when Connect support ends?

Atlassian ends support for Connect apps on 31 January 2027. PlantUML Diagrams by Bitwerf is built on Forge, the platform Atlassian supports going forward.
